Concert Photos: Wikicommons Revisited

Every now-and-then I like to trawl through Wikicommons in search of concert photos. It’s a bit of an adventure as I stumble across one interesting photo after another. This trip found me venturing into a lot of make-up, cool and eerie outfits and costumes.

This collection has a decidedly darker vibe to it. Not only in the  appearance of some band members and singers but in the name of some of the bands, too. Most notably Suicide Silence, Ghost and Lord of the Lost.

King Diamond is a Danish heavy metal musician. He is said to have a good vocal range and is particularly known for his use of falsetto. The star on his hat is the official symbol of LaVeyan Satanism and the church of Satan. He follows it as a philosophy rather than a religion.

Ghost is a Swedish heavy metal band that has an eccentric on-stage presence. Five of it’s members wear hooded robes while the vocalist appears wearing skull make-up and dressed as a demonic anti-Pope slash satanic priest. What is interesting about the band is that their identities are a secret and haven’t been publicly revealed. The vocalist refers to himself as Papa Emeritus and the musicians are referred to as Nameless Ghouls.

Their satanic theme has certainly put some obstacles in their path. While recording ‘Infestissumam’ in Tennessee they were unable to find choral singers who would sing their lyrics. The parts had to be recorded in Hollywood. According to one of the ‘Nameless Ghouls’ their music was banned in the United States from major chain stores, most late-night television shows as well as most commercial radio stations.

In stark contrast there are a few images of The Grailknights all decked out in their colorful superhero costumes. Their shows have a bit of a Masters of the Universe vibe to them.  Think humorous epic battles as they try to reclaim the Holy Grail that was stolen from them by evil Dr. Skull. No, I’m not making this up! Several side characters appear while the audience is called their battlechoir which they interact with in different ways.
