Swarovski is the Master of Finely Cut, High Quality Crystal
Swarovski is the luxury brand name for the range of precision-cut lead crystal glass and related products produced by companies owned by Swarovski AG of Feldmeilen, near Zurich, Switzerland.
The crystals produced by the company have dazzled admirers with their beauty and brilliance for over a hundred years. Top-quality, full cut crystal, expertly faceted and polished. The end product is something truly exquisite and resplendent.
History of Swarovski
It all goes back to the ingenuity and hard work of Daniel Swarovski who invented an automatic cutting machine in 1892. He founded a crystal cutting factory three years later in Wattens (close to Tyrol, Austria). Here he took advantage of the local hydroelectricity for the energy-intensive grinding process.
It wasn’t long before these comparitively inexpensive, gem-like crystals caught the attention of both the masses and the elite of Paris and St. Petersburg. They were especially popular when incorporated into fashion jewelry.
The demand was so great that Swarovski had to hire an additional 200 employees and in 1908 his three sons joined the company making it a family enterprise.
There are a large range of products today that use Swarovski crystal. Crystal chandeliers, lighting, sculptures and figurines. USB Memory sticks, crystalline pens, smart phone cases and watches. Desk set decorations, picture frames and candle sticks. The list goes on.
In 1987, the Swarovski Collectors Society (SCS) was established offering collectors of Swarovski crystal special benefits and services. There are now over 450,000 members in 35 countries.
Production & Processing
Swarovski crystal is made in a factory. The products we see today are the result of mastery in the areas of production method and the processing of the raw material. The dazzling crystals are made using a combination of natural minerals and quartz sand which is fired and then cooled slowly to avoid imperfections.
Swarovski crystals are said to shine noticeably brighter than that of their competitors. They have been able to distinguish their products thanks to patents and the secret formula they use. Part of the brilliance is no doubt due to the amount of lead (thought to be about 32%) used as well as their special technique of crystal cutting.
Today the company which employs around 24,000 people produces about 80% of all crystals used in high-quality jewelry.
When shopping you may have seen jewelry and accessories claiming to be made with Swarovski elements. Many designers and manufacturers from all over the world buy crystal from the company and incorporate them into their products. These products should come with a MADE WITH SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS trapezoid-shaped tag that serves as a sign of authenticity.
