A good dosage of inspiration can mark a turning point in your life.

“You suffer unnecessarily, Andrew. Put an end to this struggle and sadness in your life. There are thousands and thousands of profiles out there. Focus on the critical inch. Find people you have a rapport and greater affinity with. To be rid of this sadness once and for all.”
Journal Entry 2005

A Battle With Elephants

Shortly before Project Fellowship started I saw the special extended edition of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. I saw the scene where the riders of Rohan battled the huge elephants with new eyes. These elephants took on new identities of indifference, carelessness and apathy. Rather than feeling crushed by the overwhelming odds the riders of Rohan faced I was instead inspired by the depicted courage I saw. It was clear to me then that I needed to be courageous.

I caught a spark of that depicted courage, cupped it gently in my hands and placed it ever so carefully in my heart. I became determined from that point on to have the kind of friends I wanted to have. I have never been so resolute and determined in my life.

“Ride out with me. Ride out and meet them. For death and glory. For Rohan. For your people. The sun is rising… Yes. Yes. The horn of Helm Hammerhand…shall sound in the deep…one last time. Yes! Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds, awake. Now for wrath … now for ruin and a red dawn. Forth Eorlingas!
– King Theoden of Rohan, The Twin Towers

There was one other thing spurring me to action. Just like what happened at Helms Deep in the Twin Towers the defenses that protected my mental health were not holding and I knew I had to do something. What I was about to do was to take the same bold and courageous action of Theoden and Aragorn and ride out. No enemies, just befriending a new group of people.

In December 2005, that’s exactly what I did. I flung open the doors of my life, put my hand on my heart, shouted a challenge to my fear and charged.
