Mark Ruffalo – A Raging Success

Mark Ruffalo is an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter. Many will associate him with his portrayal of the Marvel Comics character Bruce Banner from the Avengers movies. He has been in many notable films, however, including Collateral (2004), Zodiac (2007) and Shutter Island (2010). In these movies he starred alongside Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., and Leonardo DiCaprio.

It was Ruffalo’s chance meeting with writer director Kenneth Lonergan that would pave the way to the initial critical acclaim he enjoyed. They ended up collaborating together. Raffalo appeared in several of his plays was one of the original cast members of ‘This is Our Youth’ (1996).

When it was time for Lonergan to direct, ‘You Can Count on Me,’ Raffalo was given the role of Laura Linney’s troubled drifter brother. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award. Raffalo received favorable reviews and won awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Montreal World Film Festival.

For his roles in The Kids Are All Right (2010) and Foxcatcher (2014), he received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor. He also landed a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for The Normal Heart, which he also produced.

Mark Ruffalo’s  Love of Directing

‘Sympathy for Delicious’ was Ruffalo’s directorial debut. It’s a movie about a newly paralyzed DJ who gets more than he bargained for when he seeks out the world of faith healing. He was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and was also nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.

Raffalo enjoys directing immensely loving the communal aspect of it. He finds it a joy to collaborate with gifted people and to have his fingers in many pieces of the movie pie. He’d like to spend half of his time acting and the other half directing but there’s just not enough money in directing at the moment to do so.

The Advocate

Mark Raffalo is certainly not timid when it comes to saying what’s on his mind and in his heart.

In 2006, for example, he appeared on the daily news program Democracy Now! He spoke out against the Bush Administration, the War in Iraq, the Military Commisions Act of 2006 and torture.

Concerning abortion he takes a pro-choice stance. His reasoning is that he doesn’t want to see the days returning when women shuttled over the border to have an abortion at a cheap hotel.

Raffalo is a 100% clean energy and anti-fracking advocate. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is a technique used to fracture deep-rock formations to help natural gas, petroleum and brine to flow more freely. It’s a highly controversial practice due to it’s impact on the environment.

I really enjoyed Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal as Bruce Banner. I think he fits in nicely with the main cast. Despite the ending of the Age of Ultron I hope to see him in the role of Bruce Banner either in the third Avenger’s movie or in a new Hulk movie.
