Smart Phones Usurp Dedicated Handheld Gaming Devices
It hasn’t gone unnoticed by game developers that the smart phone is a virtual gold mine when it comes to gaming. Games are appearing on smart phones that deliver a console like experience and some of them are cross-platform meaning you can play multiplayer even if your friend has an iphone running iOS and your phone uses Android.
Who would have even thought a decade ago that reviewers would be talking about a cell phone game’s real-time shadows and lighting, a particle system or applauding it’s ragdoll physics? They’ve had the Nintendo 3DS and the Playstation Vita in a feverish sweat but when the new phones come out this year equipped with the Tegra K1 that may change to catatonic. The new chip from Nvidia is said to be more powerful than the Playstation 3 or the Xbox 360. It has a 192 CUDA core processor that supports Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 and can play anything that runs on a PC. Say what?!
That aside, it’s way cool that wherever you are you can still keep in touch with friends via games like Words with Friends, Hanging With Friends and Scramble With Friends.
Feel like playing Halo but you’re far from home. No matter. Play N.O.V.A. 3 instead on your mobile iOS device. Said to be one of the best sci-fi shooters that looks visually stunning. While the single player campaign is definitely worth looking into multiplayer allows you to decimate your opponents with a spray of lethal firepower and throw a grenade for good measure. Capture the flag. Check. Deathmatch! Check.
There are some really cool accessories for phones, too. Take for example the GameKlip (TM) which allows you to connect wirelessly or via a USB cable a PS3 controller to certain kinds of phones. The Zagg Caliber Advantage controller for the iphone 5 and the Moga Bluetooth Controller are also worth a look.
